This is a 1954 Map of Hong Kong. Drafted by Hong Kong Books & Stationary Industry Association (HKBSIA) and printed by Tungar Printing Co. Ltd. The map was printed only in Traditional Chinese; we cannot confirm whether an English was ever published.
This is a typical layout of many maps in Hong Kong, which comprises a Map of Hong Kong and New Territories, A Map of Kowloon below Boundary Street, and a map of the northern part of Hong Kong Island—Victoria City.
The year 1954 is very special because, during this time, the government officially approved plans to turn the Kai Tak Airport into an international Airport. The 13/31 Runway was extended a few times and later became the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Another unique feature of this map is in the top right corner of the map. It is a diagram of the Hong Kong Typhoon signals. In the old days, workers would hang metal signs or lights on a tower to indicate the typhoon's strength. People need to understand the signs as typhoons in Hong Kong could get destructive. This map contains drawings of daytime and nighttime signals and their implications. As time passes, some signals have become obsolete, but some are still in use today.
